In 1958 the Northumberland Coast was deemed so precious that it was designated as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Today 39 miles of shoreline stretching from the Coquet Estuary in the south to Berwick-Upon-Tweed in the north, is safeguarded in the national interest. The rocky promontories, offshore islands, sweeping sandy bays, flower-rich dune systems and miles of intertidal mud are not only attractive to the eye, but they are also vitally important for the thousands of plant and animal species that reside here. 

Coast Care - a partnership initiative of Northumberland Coast AONB, Northumberland Wildlife Trust and Seahouses Development Trust - was established in order to train, support and resource volunteers to help contribute to the management and conservation of these ecologically significant landscapes.

From beach cleans to wildlife surveys, tree planting to dry stone walling - there are a huge variety of tasks to suit all interests and abilities. Volunteers are integral to the positive impact Coast Care can make and we welcome and encourage anyone interested to get involved.
